Fog again - but Roderick and Daniel have made it the 26 miles across mainland Shetland from Lerwick to West Burrafirth to catch the Snolda, and are on their way.

Morning at the Bird Observatory, led by Kerry - practising attentive listening. She teaches the children the basics of how to draw of visual score which we were then able to sing. We divide up into teams to set out around the north of the isle, close to the Bird Obs, on a mission to collect sounds, making field recordings using zoom recorders, and marking these sounds on a map. The fog is perfect for recordings as the wind has dropped, and there is something of an echo chamber created by the surrounding mists.

Later Kerry edits these together to make a track - “Our Fair Isle Sounds” - which you can listen to below:

Sounds of Fair Isle chosen, recorded and curated by the children of Fair Isle Primary School, under the guidance of Kerry Andrew - "Half-Island Half-Bird" project, Fair Isle August 2016

Afternoon is spent at the school, an all-comers workshop with Zack teaching how to sculpt with wire - first our names, then tackling birds. (The Good Shepherd has just arrived back to North Haven and the skipper Neil comes straight to the workshop, still in his boat overalls - such enthusiasm!)

Roderick and Daniel also arrive from the Snolda, a little wobbly after 7 hours on the choppy sea, and more than delighted to be here - team Half-Island Half-Bird is complete!
