Smetana & Beethoven
"When I plunge into musical ecstasy then for a while I forget everything that persecutes me so cruelly in my old age" Smetana
Celebrating the string quartets of two composers in their final years:
Smetana's semi-autobiographical romantic String Quartet no.1 From My Life sketches periods from his life with heartbreaking beauty and Beethoven's magnificent Quartet in A minor Op.132 "a song of thanksgiving offered to the divinity by a convalescent feeling of new strength" was composed after recovering from a near-death experience.
CHROMA musicians Dave Le Page (violin) and Clare O'Connell (cello) are joined by Cathy Leech (violin) and Vanessa McNaught (viola) to present an evening of sublime music to move the soul.
